Dhanteras is a major Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil and is observed in India and Nepal. It is typically celebrated on the fifth day of the bright half of the Hindu lunar month of Karthika, and will fall on October 28th, 2023. 

Dhanteras Significance and Legends :

One popular legend revolves around the story of the young son of King Hima. As per a prophecy, the prince was destined to die due to a snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. However, his wife took strategic measures and laid out ornaments, gold coins, and lit lamps to form a shining barrier at the entrance of their chamber.

She narrated stories and sang songs to keep her husband awake through the night. When Yama, the god of death, arrived in the guise of a serpent, he was dazzled by the radiance of the lamps and the glimmer of the gold. His eyes were blinded by the shining objects, and he could not enter. Consequently, the prince was saved from his fate. This day is commemorated as Dhanteras, symbolizing wealth, prosperity, and the celebration of life.

How to Celebrate Dhanteras at Home and Loved Ones:

People observe Dhanteras with various customs and traditions to attract wealth and prosperity into their lives:

1. Shopping for Gold and Utensils: It is a common practice to buy gold, silver, or copper items on Dhanteras, as they symbolize prosperity. Utensils, in particular, hold special significance and are bought or gifted on this day.
2. Cleaning and Decoration: Homes are cleaned, renovated, and decorated with colorful Rangoli designs, flowers, and lights to welcome the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi.
3. Lighting Lamps and Diyas: Lighting oil lamps (diyas) signifies the triumph of light over darkness and the dispelling of negativity.

1. Puja and Worship: Devotees perform puja rituals, offering prayers to Lord Dhanvantari for good health and Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity. They chant hymns, offer sweets, fruits, and flowers as a gesture of reverence.
2. Auspicious Timing: The auspicious timing to perform Dhanteras puja is during the Pradosh Kaal. This timing is believed to be propitious for invoking blessings and prosperity.
3. Sharing Sweets and Gifts: Exchanging sweets and gifts with family and friends is a customary practice to spread joy and happiness.
