Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, is a major Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna is deeply revered for his role as the protector of dharma (righteousness) and as a symbol of divine love, wisdom, and compassion. The festival is marked by devotion, joy, and various rituals that bring together millions of devotees worldwide. In 2024, Janmashtami will be celebrated on August 26th, coinciding with the auspicious Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga. This special timing makes the day even more significant, as devotees engage in fasting, singing devotional songs, and performing rituals to honor Krishna and seek his blessings for a life filled with love and righteousness. The celebration also includes traditions like Dahi Handi, where participants reenact Krishna’s playful pranks, adding joy and togetherness to the festival.
Holi is a popular ancient Hindu festival, also known as the “Festival of Love”, the “Festival of Colours” and the “Festival of Spring”.
Bhai Dooj, a celebration similar to Raksha Bandhan; honors the relationship between brothers and sisters. It occurs on Dwitiya Tithi, Kartik, and Shukla Paksha (the second day of the waxing phase of the Moon in Kartik month as per the Purnimant calendar). In most locations, Diwali celebrations end with Bhai Dooj, which is commonly incorporated as part of the five-day festival of lights. On this day, siblings gather for the customary ritual, along with some delicious feast to remember.
One of the most prominent five-day festivities is Diwali. The Govardhan Puja or Annakoot festival is observed on the second day of this festival. This festival commemorates Lord Krishna’s triumph over Indra and is observed on the Pratipada of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. The number of days between Diwali and Govardhan Puja is affected by lunar cycles. Worshiping and serving cows on this day is especially significant since cows are seen to be as pure as Mata Ganga.
The Ganesha pooja is mandatory along with the Lakshmi pooja during this festival. As the gods of wealth and prosperity, Lord Ganesha and Maa Lakshmi have traditionally been revered by merchants.
Purchasing gold during Dhanteras is said to bring Lord Kuber’s blessings into the home. Also, according to common belief, the items you acquire on this day are worth 13 times more because of the Lord of Wealth’s blessings.
