Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is commemorated on the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of Vaisakha. The word "Akshaya" is Sanskrit for anything that never ceases or is immortal. The day is deemed fortunate for purchasing a new home, automobile, or gold, as well as making any major life decisions since they are likely to bring results.

Timings of Tritiya Tithi

This year's Akshaya Tritiya Puja Muhurat spans from 5:39 a.m. to 12:18 p.m., according to Drikpanchang.

The Tritiya Tithi commences at 5:18 a.m. on May 3rd.

The Tritiya Tithi concludes on May 4 at 7:32 a.m.

Significance

The auspicious event of Akshaya Tritiya is associated with a variety of mythical legends. Some believe the day represents Lord Kuber's elevation to the position of God's Treasurer, while others associate it with Lord Krishna and the Mahabharata. Lord Krishna and his adolescent best friend, Sudama, are featured in one of the legends.

Krishna and Sudama used to study together at a gurukul when they were younger. It began to rain fiercely one day as the two were scavenging for wood in a forest. Both ducked beneath a tree for cover. When he became famished, Sudama shared some of the rice he had brought for himself with Lord Krishna.

Years later, when Sudama was living in terrible poverty, he resolved to see Krishna and brought a handful of rice with him to gift to the deity. Krishna was overjoyed to meet his best friend and treated him like a royal.

Sudama was stunned by Krishna's kindness and walked back home, unable to get the nerve to ask him for anything. When he arrived at his destination, he was surprised to find it brimming with gold and wealth. This is thought to have happened on Akshaya Tritiya, and it is through this that the narrative of Lord Krishna and Sudama is tied to the event.

The day also commemorates the birth of Lord Parshuram, Lord Vishnu's sixth avatar.

Puja rituals

On this day, people worship and gift Lord Vishnu with yellow garments, sandalwood paste, incense sticks, basil leaves, and flowers. Many followers recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or Vishnu Chalisa to invoke the god's favor.
