According to Hindu legend, Lord Dhanvantari, a godly physician, came before the Devas and Asuras at Samudra Manthan. He possessed Amrita, or the elixir of immortality, as well as the Ayurvedic scripture.

Both the Devas and the Asuras desired the nectar to become eternal, which resulted in a battle between the two mythological factions. Garuda, typically represented as a big eagle-like bird or a half-human, half-bird monster, was the one who kept the nectar safe from the Asuras.
