Diwali 2024: The festival of lights is right around the corner. Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is the time of the festive season when we deep clean our homes, gear up to deck every surface with flowers, lights and rangolis, and buy new clothes for attending parties and gatherings with loved ones. As the preparations begin, there is one confusion bugging everyone. Whether the festival is on October 31 or November 1? Read on to learn the correct date, puja timings, and traditions.

Diwali 2024: Is Deepawali on October 31 or November 1?

The debate on whether to celebrate Diwali on 31st October or 1st November in 2024 stems from the lunar calendar, which determines the exact day for Lakshmi Puja, the highlight of Diwali.

According to Hindu astrology, Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya Tithi (new moon night), which is the most auspicious time for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi. In 2024, Amavasya Tithi begins on October 31st at 1:58 PM and ends on November 1st at 3:33 PM.

Diwali 2024: Shubh muhurat

However, the Muhurats (auspicious times) for Lakshmi Puja vary:

• 31st October has favorable evening Muhurats, aligning with traditional beliefs that Lakshmi Puja should be done after sunset on Amavasya night.
• 1st November also falls within the Amavasya period, but many astrologers suggest the most powerful time for the puja ends earlier in the day.
• Considering these facts, most astrologers recommend celebrating Diwali on 31st October 2024, as the evening marks the correct window for Lakshmi Puja.

However, some may choose to celebrate on November 1st based on local customs or beliefs, as the Tithi extends into that day.

Diwali 2024: Significance

Diwali is the Festival of Lights. It commemorates the victory of good over evil and Lord Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman's return to Ayodhya after completing their 14-year exile and defeating Ravana. People celebrate the auspicious day by decorating their homes, wearing new clothes, exchanging gifts with loved ones, eating delicious sweets, and making rangoli. Hindu devotees also worship Maa Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha.
