On this day, brothers go to their sister's house for puja and a feast. Sisters pray for their brothers' well-being and uphold the customs established by Goddess Yamuna. They place a Tilak on their brother's forehead and pray to the Gods and Goddesses for his long life.

According to one tale, this event is related to GoddessYamuna and her brother Lord Yama. Lord Yama was never able to visit his sister's home since his duties kept him busy all day. As a result, he would always politely refuse her invitation, claiming his hectic schedule. But then, one day, however he shocked her by visiting her and bestowing a blessing on her. Yamuna, was overjoyed to see her brother at her house, prayed to protect her brother from death on Bhai Dooj. She also requested him to bless everyone who bathed in her sacred waters. As a result, Bhai Dooj is considered significant.

According to Hindu customs, Bhai Dooj, also known as Yama Dwitiya or Bhai Tika, celebrates the very pure bond of love and protection. Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the second lunar day of 'Shukla Paksha' (bright fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Kartika, which is 2 days after the Diwali celebration. On the day of the festival, sisters invite their brothers for a sumptuous meal often including their favorite dishes/sweets.

Celebrations

In its essence and sentiment, Bhai Dooj is quite similar to Raksha Bandhan but on this occasion the ceremonial Rakhi is not tied on the wrist. On this day, elder siblings give gifts and money to their younger siblings who in turn apply the tika to their foreheads and pray for their wellbeing and protection. The entire family gets together to celebrate this auspicious festival and to indulge in the various delicacies.

Wish you all a happy Diwali!

If you liked this article or want to share some information with us then do write us in the comment section below.
